EMWIS, Euro-Mediterranean Information System on know-how in the Water sector

The Euro-Mediterranean Information System on know-how in the Water sector (EMWIS) has been created following the Euro-Mediterranean Ministerial Conference on Local Water Management in Marseilles (November 1996). This initiative aims to improve regional cooperation, in particular by making available information on Integrated Water Resource Management in all the partners’ countries.

Nowadays, EMWIS has become the main tool for the exchange of information and knowledge for the water domain in the Mediterranean region. Since 2014, within the framework of the Mediterranean Water Knowledge Platform, labelled by the UfM (Union for the Mediterranean), EMWIS supports the development of National Water Information Systems, shared among the main institutions of each country, in order to improve the processes of planning and adaptation to climate change.

To ensure the maximum impact on the Mediterranean water sector, complementarity and synergies of funding and actions should be exploited under the different instruments and programmes existing in the region. Thus, EMWIS takes part in many projects in the Euro-Mediterranean such as Hydrousa, EdicitNet or Circular City.

EMWIS provides a monthly Flash that gives regular and quality information on the water sector in the Euro-Mediterranean area. The main headlines are: Institutions, Documentation, Training, Research and Development, Data Administration. There are also updates on international events, relevant web sites, the Euro-Med Water programme of the European Commission, and much more.
On their March to April Flash, EMWIS included an article about the European FIWARE4Water project and more specifically on the collaboration between The Centre for Water Systems (CWS) at the University of Exeter and the South West Water (SWW) within the FIWARE4Water project.
